Slashdot and the Baltimore Sun report that Baltimore has set up free wireless Internet access along most of the Inner Harbor, stretching from the Science Center to the World Trade Center. At the unveiling, Mayor Martin O’Malley commented that “Baltimore UnWired is a great way to educate the general public on the benefits of wireless technology, and it will help to connect the people of our city to the Internet.” This may be true, but you will need a laptop computer with a WiFi card to access the Internet along the waterfront. And there are possible security issues associated with WiFi that are hopefully being addressed by the service. Still, it’s nice to hear that Baltimore has joined other cities in offering free access in the hopes of attracting people and businesses to the Inner Harbor. If I still lived nearby I’d definitely go more often…
