New OED Additions

The quarterly update to the OED addressed entries from “must” to “necessity,” as well as adding many new words and phrases to its comprehensive lexicon, including (scroll down to the bottom of the OED page):

bazillion and gazillion – terms thought too technical until recently

bitch-slap – up until now, there was no proper way to describe how to discipline one’s whore

cocksman – hee hee, they said “cock”

crotchless – the politically correct term had been “genitally accessible”

droid – C3PO’s heavy lobbying apparently paid off

gaydar – wrong on many levels

hat hair and hat head – I for one am glad to see the subtle nuance recognized

heli-ski – WTF?

imagineer – is that some Michael Jackson Captain EO thing?

IMO and IMHO – great, as if children weren’t descending into IM grammar hell already

iophendylate – Iodophenylundecylic acid has made the big time!

low rider – OK, I need audio to comment on this one… :-p

napkin rash – dare I ask?

queercore – I had no idea

shit-eating (noun and adjective!), shit happens, shitload, – and shit, shit-for-brains – Holy Shit!

skanky – now you can describe strippers eruditely

techno-pagan – I have no idea.

Trustafarian – kind of a cool word, actually

warp speed, warp factor, and warp factor two – Trekkies rejoice!

Zorb and zorbing – fun!

There’s quite a mixed bag here, although I shudder at validating some of these entries as “proper” English…

Orrin Hatch, RIAA Pawn

In an article that shows how the RIAA’s poisonous anti-technology views are spreading, the Washington Post reports that Senator Orrin Hatch “favors developing new technology to remotely destroy the computers of people who illegally download music from the Internet.” Oh, but don’t worry: the “technology that would twice warn a computer user about illegal online behavior” and then “destroy their computer.” I realize that a lot of lawmakers are insulated from the Real World and are probably not technologically savvy, but this is ridiculous. I can just see RIAA lobbyists whispering Grima-like platitudes to Congressmen, slowly but inexorably convincing them that this is their only course. The article points out that “legal experts have said any such attack would violate federal anti-hacking laws,” but I’m sure that Congress won’t let anything as piddly as their own laws prevent them from doing their Corporate duty.

I suggest that anyone who is against this effort visit Senator Hatch’s web page and let him know how you feel.

Who needs reality?

According to a University of Maryland poll, not the average US citizen. The poll found that one-third of Americans think that WMD have been found in Iraq. Perhaps more amazing is that 22% thought that WMD were used during the war. It gets better. Over half of the people questioned think that some of the Sept. 11 hijackers were from Iraq. I don’t know whether to be sad or angry. What scares me is that we have an administration that is so willing manipulate the feeble minded masses. Just look back on history and think how many totalitarian regimes drew their power from the fear and ignorance of their populations. Damn, time to move to Sweden.

Eighties Ending

CrossFilms presents Eighties Ending, a short film combining the stereotypical endings of every ‘80s movie you remember. OK, not every one, but a lot of them. I must admit that I was hoping for a little more from the film, but it was still pretty fun. Shaft, we need to get to work on our ’80s magnum opus, because I know we can do at least as well…

The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers DVD Releases

I’m highly anticipating the DVD release of The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, especially because of the deleted scenes that will be included in the Platinum Series Extended Version. USA Today reports that the Platinum Series DVD will include, among other things, 43 minutes of deleted scenes, some of which I believe will really help flesh out the story. The Platinum Series DVD is due out on November 18th, but if you really need your fix you can buy the regular Widescreen version due out on August 26th. I for one am willing to wait…
