Yahoo reports that a live-action adaptation of the Transformers TV series/extended toy commercial is in development. I know that Hollywood executives can be a little excitable and short-sighted, but can they really be this moronic? Now maybe I’m missing something here, but just exactly how will actors be able to play robots that transform into cars? The first thing that came to mind was this PvPonline comic from last week…
VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs From The Past 25 Years”
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” should NOT be listed as the #1 song of the past 25 years! It should be on the list, but not as #1. I need to take a closer look at the list to see if they made any other egregious errors or omissions; the inclusion of Celine Dion (#24) is the only other obvious gaffe that I noticed at first glance.
Maybe I should start a topic on the message board, although participation has been sadly almost non-existent, so maybe I won’t bother…
Update: It looks like they’ve changed their site to only reveal songs #100-#81, which corresponds to the first episode of the series that airs tonight; here’s the full list. Oh, and sorry if I ruined the suspense for those of you that preferred to wait until Friday… :-p
New Jersey sucks.
So the Devils won the Stanley Cup. I can live with that. Since the old Patrick Division days I have disliked the Devils, but I don’t harbor utter contempt for them like I do for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The Devils played a good series, and they deserved the win. So why does New Jersey suck? The Conn Smythe Trophy goes to the player that contributes the most to his team’s play in all rounds of the playoffs. Well, this year’s MVP was Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the goalie for the losing Mighty Ducks. This was an OBVIOUS choice, as he was more responsible for their success than all the other Ducks combined. The Devils’ victory was, on the other hand, an all-player effort with a wide variety of contributors. Are you still with me? When Giguere was announced as the MVP, the fans a-holes in New Jersey booed him. He slinked off the ice with his trophy as they continued to boo him. At least the Devil players tried to set an example by cheering him. So here’s to you Jersey fans, you no-class pieces of shit!
The RIAA Sucks
I’ve made many posts that decried the actions of the RIAA, but its most recent action shows just how petty, spiteful, and simply illogical the organization has become. In its latest attempt to crusade against “music piracy,” the RIAA sued 19-year-old Jesse Jordan, a freshman student at RPI. His “crime?” He started a search directory website for the RPI campus: “‘You go to the site, you type in a search term, and it finds files on the network,’ Jordan said. Jordan compares his site to Google, the popular Internet search engine.” Of course using this site can find all sorts of files on the network, including music files, but that’s the case with any search engine. However, RIAA has (once again) massively overreacted, saying Jordan “hijacked an academic network” and “installed an emporium for music trading.” Rather than duke it out with this industry bully, Jordan settled the case, giving up his entire $12,000 life savings.
The RIAA maintains that it took this action as a deterrent, but I think this is the shittiest thing they’ve done yet; read the Slashdot story for more discussion, comments, and rants. In the meantime, though, visit Jesse’s site, ChewPlastic.com, and donate to help him recoup his losses. Better yet, spread the word and let your Congressman or Representative know that you are strongly against the ham-handed tactics of the RIAA. It may not be much, but we can only hope that with enough pressure the RIAA will realize that it needs to embrace new technology rather than combat it; it’s the only way the music industry will survive.
1983 High-Tech!
Gizmodo, an excellent weblog that covers the latest in gadgets and high-tech, features a flashback to high-tech in 1983, including the first mouse, the Walkman, Motorola’s first portable phone, and more. Pretty cool…
V: The Second Generation?!
CNN reports that a sequel to the short-lived 1983 series V is in development in the form of a three-hour movie entitled V: The Second Generation. I didn’t follow the original series too closely, but I can’t imagine that they’ll do much better with a sequel…
The Heart Of The Beholder
Described as “the movie Hollywood is afraid to make,” The Heart Of The Beholder sounds like quite a compelling story:
The story was a true account of how a young couple was ruined by a group of religious fundamentalists because they were the only video store owners who dared to carry Martin Scorsese’s controversial film, The Last Temptation of Christ. The couple stood up against relentless harassment, intimidation, and even death threats. When the couple refused to buckle, the religious zealots blackmailed the District Attorney into destroying their business and family.
The story implied that there might be a happy ending, but since I haven’t heard about the case, I’m not sure. It sounds as if it’s definitely a story that needs to be told, whatever the outcome.
Gollum Wins!
Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (and the upcoming Return of the King), won the award for “Best Virtual Performance” in this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Although I think that his exclusion from the Oscar nominees was a travesty, I’m very glad that his performance was finally recognized, even if it was only at the MTV awards. Check out a video of his acceptance speech (or more likely at one of the mirrors listed in the Slashdot story), which is one of the funniest I’ve seen in a long time.
3rd Annual Nigerian E-Mail Conference
I’ve posted before about the annoyingly ubiquitous Nigerian e-mail scams. Well, this page is a great spoof of the phenomenon…
