Former Senator Strom Thurmond’s death last week was not much of a surprise, as he just turned 100 years old, retiring from the Senate after serving for 47 years. He never repented from his past segregationist statements and platforms, despite many apocryphal figments to the contrary. However, the recent revelation that Thurmond “sired a daughter in 1925 with a black house servant named Essie ‘Tunch’ Butler throws an even harsher light on his hypocrisy. The article does a much better job in exploring the implications of this than I can, but I will add that this editorial cartoon is that much more fitting.
